Flash of Gold
Excerpt
"Aren’t you tired of repeating the same things over and over?” He asked, leaning against her car. “Didn’t you imagine that you would stir up trouble by coming here? Paige thinks that you came specifically to cause problems because you had your own problems with your family and that you wanted a substitute family. Both Brian and I think that she has a solid point.”
Angered, Blaine gave in to the feeling and snapped, “Maybe I didn’t think about it. Maybe I didn’t care. Maybe,” thunder began crashing and lightning flashed, “I just wanted to fit in. Maybe I wanted to belong once and not feel different. Maybe I thought that ‘hey, these are my blood relatives, they have to accept me’ and nothing would matter. A little trouble would be worth it.” Breathing hard and still trembling, she stared at her brother, daring him to deny her. He wasn’t paying attention to her; he was watching the sky.
Lightning still flashed, causing a golden glow through the night sky, but the thunder had quieted. He looked finally at his half-sister. Her eyes were still flashing with temper.
“Interesting,” he murmured. Wanting to test his new theory, he taunted Blaine. “What makes you think you’d fit in? Or that we’d even want you here and just accept you?” Lightning continued to flash, growing brighter as the thunder returned. Logan smiled, as if proving something to himself. Blaine saw the smile and misinterpreted it.
“Are you making fun of me?” A light breeze swirled around Blaine’s hair. Her face remained expressionless, causing Logan to wonder how she could exert a lot of power without giving it away.
“No, I was testing a theory.” He decided to be honest. Blaine saw clearly then what he had been doing. Immediately, the sky quieted.
“You would risk upsetting me just to prove that I am adept? Why? Because neither you nor your grandfather could get past my shields?” Logan, surprised by her intuition and the mention of shields, asked how she had known. “I can feel you two pushing.” Shaking her head, she thrust the wind towards the house and opened the front door.
“Stop it. Blaine, the Penningtons don’t know.”
She laughed and rolled her eyes. “Seriously, Logan? Willow is dating Brian. And Jenna…” She hesitated. “Maybe you should have said that they ignore it or only suspect.” She turned to face the house and waited.
Logan waited with her. He finally saw his family watching from the front door. They were standing in front of the Penningtons, blocking their full view. He started to get worried.
“Blaine,” he began.
She turned her bright gold eyes towards him. “Isn’t this what you wanted? What you taunted me to do?”
Logan could feel the heat rise as the thunder rolled. Suddenly Blaine’s left hand shot up as she caught a lightning bolt from the sky. She twirled it in her hands, playing with it for a few minutes while staring at her paternal grandfather. Just as quickly, she threw it up towards the sky and snapped her fingers. It faded away, doing harm to nothing.
“Does this satisfy? Did I pass your test, Grandfather?” She called out. At his stunned look, she laughed. “Thought so.”
Throwing open her car door with her mind, she jumped in and sped down the driveway. They watched as she drove, stunned. Logan walked back to the house, dazed. He noticed that his little sister looked as if she was about to cry.
Gavin finally recovered enough to laugh. “No power? She sure fooled you.”
“But how?” Logan whispered.
“I don’t know. But I will find out.” James vowed. Gavin looked at Claire, unsure of how he felt about his father’s grim announcement.
