Creating from Nothing

The January blues hit hard, and continued into February. This week especially has been rough. I’ve stalled on adding in more chapters and editing The Lost Daughter. I stopped writing blogs, instead becoming engrossed in a TV show.

Write On

Currently, the TV show I’ve been obsessing over (again!) is MacGyver. I’ve seen both the original and reboot, but right now I’ve been watching the reboot. Anyway, what I wanted to write about was the fact that in the show, Mac always makes something out of nothing.

Isn’t that what writers do? Create a world, a story, something out of nothing? Just using their imagination. Of course, Mac ends saving the day each time, and while writers don’t necessarily save the day – unless it is in their world – it is still creating something from nothing.

World of Pure Imagination

It takes a lot to create a story – from characters, to the story arc, to an entire world. Sometimes the story ideas flow through fast and easy as a waterfall after a storm; other times, it’s a mere trickle in which you are squeezing every last drop out. At least until you get over a hump and feel refreshed and your imagination begins creating stories again.

Creating a world in a story that you wrote with just your imagination always feels like an accomplishment. Just like Mac creates his objects that save the world from things all around him, so do writers. They take what they’ve observed from the world, add their little spin and imagination, and create a story. Even if no one else ever reads it, you created it from nothing – and should be proud. Of course, most writers want someone to read it.

So while I have been watching Mac create things each episode to help save the world, my mind has been thinking. Even though I don’t feel as if my mind has been completely refreshed or that I’m over the January blues, I am going to keep writing. Even if it isn’t very good, or has to be completely changed, it’s still my creation made from nothing.

Write on – and create something with your imagination.
