Publishing Debates

As always, the idea of publishing is never far from my mind. Of course, I’m always in editing mode – unless I’ve put that project aside to write another story. Editing and thinking about publishing, a continuous loop in my mind as I struggle to find the will to completely finish the second draft of The Lost Daughter. The dream that I’ve had since I was young was to have my stories published. Before the last several years, I was strictly for going the traditional route on publishing. I would query an agent and publish at one of THE (five) big publishing houses.

However, as technology has advanced, so has self-publishing, I am thinking more and more about simply going the route of self-publishing. I’ve researched blogs (like this one) and gone to author talks about the pros and cons of each. Yes, I would love to have my novels published by a large publishing house, or even a small one, but if it isn’t going to be so, is it because my writing is bad? Or is it just that there are so many writers trying to get published and they only do so many a year?

Put Yourself Out There

Additionally, I’ve heard a lot more about promoting. For a non-name author, it is really hard to get a) published and b) promoted. You (typically, not always) end up doing most of your promotion yourself. Now, a self-published author may not get the bookstore signings or tour, but at least the story is out there and hopefully being read. That’s really all I want. I want my character’s stories out in the world, read, and (hopefully) liked.

So is it really bad if I go the self-publishing route? My novels would still be edited properly before submission; I would rather not have too many grammatical errors on something that was published. I would do everything I can to go the traditional route, but simply publish myself.

Publishing Decisions

These are my most recent thoughts because I’m already thinking about finishing editing and the next step because let’s face it, I’m struggling to keep going with this book. I'm ready for it to be done. I’ve done a lot of research lately on self-publishing and even Swoon Reads (goal is to submit at least one novel there by April for further beta readers, and maybe even likes to have it press-published) and while I’m still deciding, it is looking more and more like I will go the non-traditional route.

But for now, back to writing another fairy tale with a twist of deafness added in.

Write on, Wrimos!
