How do you edit?
Me, I prefer to print and edit with one of my numerous fountain pens. I’ve tried editing just by reading it on the computer and using the software, but I always get distracted. I start concentrating just on the one section that I’m reading at the time. I’ve found that if I print, I can get through the entire book. I’ll mark up what I want changed in the colors I designate as grammar, storyline issues, and more. I know that printing paper isn’t good for the environment, but I have found that I do my best editing the old-fashioned way.
Edits, edits, edits
Once I go through the book on paper, I then start by updating my document on the computer. Currently, I use either Word or Pages, but mostly Word. I strikethrough and change words and then re-save my document as an edited version. This past NaNo, I used Dabble and Scrivener. I loved the ease of moving chapters around, and found the notes of areas that I wanted to improve, or add in, very helpful. So, I decided that I’ll spend some money (but thankful for the NaNo winners code to get half off!) and get Scrivener and I’m so excited! Maybe that will help with editing on the computer?!
Once I edit on the computer, I print again (I know, I know…) and read aloud to make sure that the story flows. If I find my flaws, I work on it again. Then I read on the computer another time.
I’d like to say that this is when I get it to a beta reader and then to an editor, but I have yet to get that far. The Lost Daughter went to beta readers (one in the deaf community and one hearing), but before they really even started reading, I took it back. I know, I know. I should've let them finish and get their take on the story but I realized there was a plot issue and continuity issue so I asked them to stop reading while I fixed the areas that needed help. Now, I’m starting my second draft. Hopefully will have better luck getting it to the beta readers and eventually, an editor.
How to Publish
I could be going about getting this novel published all wrong. I’m sure that may be the case. If anyone has better ideas, let me know! I’ll take all the help I can get. Right now, I’m going back to editing on my paper copy with my fun fountain pens to hopefully make the story even better. My deadline goal to have it edited (by February and then to beta readers) is getting close. I’d love to get the publishing process started this year.
I’ve got to make a choice; I can either try the traditional publishing or I can go the self-publishing route. I’ve looked a good deal into Swoon Reads, and I think that I’ll try The Lost Daughter on that platform. If nothing else, it will get some beta readers outside of the ones I have. It has to stay on that platform for 6 months, but if nothing happens through that way, I can always self-publish.
But I can pray. And hope. Even if this story isn’t published the traditional way, well, I always have Trials of a Magical Life or even Flash of Gold (though both need work beforehand). I’m excited though – I have another idea floating about it my head. We’ll see. I’ll continue to hope. And pray. And believe. It just takes work to make it happen.
