There is a saying that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Do you believe that is true? If you break it down logically, wouldn’t it be true? Windows help one to see out or in. Eyes are how most see things in the world. So why wouldn’t you believe that looking into ones eyes you can see into their soul?
You can see happiness, sadness, pain, surprise, disbelief – emotions of all kinds in ones’ eyes. Don’t emotions come from ones’ soul? So why then, wouldn’t you see ones’ soul through their eyes?
Another item when talking about the eyes and being a window to the soul would be in the importance of eye contact. With my hearing loss, I depend on people’s faces. I read their lips, I watch their eyes, see their expressions on their face.
People often have said that I have great eye contact, which eventually leads me to explain why. If I keep contact with their eyes, I can see their lips, their expressions, any movements in my peripheral, which all help me understand the person speaking. I may miss words, but I can get the context from watching as they speak.
The new trend of staring at ones’ phones while taking? Doesn’t work for me. I need that connection, the glimpse into their soul – their thoughts – to understand what is happening.
So yes, eye context is most important. And yes, I do believe that the eyes are a window to one's soul – or at least their thoughts.
